A MASTIFF WAS ABOARD THE MAYFLOWER

You didn’t think the Puritans sailed all the way to the New World without man’s best friend in tow, did you? Of the 102 passengers aboard the Mayflower, we know of one who brought along his two dogs. That man was 25-year-old John Goodman. The names of Goodman’s dogs are lost in the sands of time, but they were a mastiff and a Springer spaniel. Goodman died in 1620, during his first winter in America, but the other Pilgrims continued caring for his dogs.
